What is the International Year One – BSc Computer Science programme?
The International Year One programme is a degree preparation programme in Southampton for international students who want to study one of the many Southampton Solent University undergraduate computing degrees, but don’t have quite the right entry qualifications to gain direct entry into year one.
This programme is the equivalent of the first year of these degrees and on successful completion of the international year one, you will directly join year two of your chosen programme of study.

If you are interested in the world of Computer Science, however, are unable to meet the undergraduate direct entry requirements but are over-qualified for foundation year study, the International Year One – BSc Computer Science programme is ideal for you.
Course modules
On this module you will learn the techniques (Qualitative and Quantitative) and tools to design, plan and develop a user research strategy.
In this module you’ll explore networks by using a network simulator to learn what devices and connections are used. These will then be applied to various principles of networking, protocols and associated technologies.
This module will introduce you to software implementation through the process of understanding how to solve problems using programming.
In this module you are introduced to the skills and concepts required to develop and use relational databases. You will learn how to write programs interacting with databases and how to create them.
Explore how digital technology has fundamentally reshaped traditional business, and how businesses try to keep up. Learn to collect, analyse, and interpret data, and to present your findings effectively.
On this module you’ll be introduced to common client server-side scripting technologies used in the development of web applications, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
On this year long module, students will be immersed into activities such as how to take effective notes, familiarisation with Word/PowerPoint software, understand classroom expectations, learn how to use the library and develop seminar skills.
Students will then be incrementally taught the critical skills to produce technical reports, deliver group and individual/group presentations and reflective essays.

They do not include the cost of course books, stationery and photocopying/printing costs, accommodation, living costs, travel, hobbies, sports or other leisure activities.
