The International Foundation Programme at Solent University is designed specifically to support you in the transition from an overseas High School education, to undergraduate study in the UK. Alongside language development units, you will also build your confidence and independence, developing your study skills. The inclusion of subject-specific pathways prepare you for your chosen subject area, enabling you to familiarise yourself with some of the theories and terminology that you can expect to encounter at undergraduate level.

This particular pathway develops your knowledge and skills in business and management, with a particular focus on external business pressures and management theory.

About The Course

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

With substantial English language development support, this International Foundation Programme will enhance your confidence and independence, alongside building your study skills, fully preparing you for UK academic culture.

The International Foundation Programme – Business and Management Pathway equips you with the essential skills to maximise your learning in a wide range of disciplines, from business and management to marketing and accounting.

Investigating the business world through multiple lenses, you will develop an understanding of the environment in which business operates and the role different functions within a business play. The pathway also introduces management theories practically, approaching business operations through the role of a manager.

These programmes are delivered as part of a partnership between Solent University and QA Higher Education. The programmes are validated by the University and delivered by QA Higher Education staff.

The International Foundation Programme is fully embedded so you will be studying your course on-campus in Southampton, with access to all of the university facilities that you can expect for your undergraduate studies at Solent.

Throughout your studies, you will be taught by experienced lecturers and academics who use their experience to develop your English and academic skills in preparation for progression on to your chosen undergraduate course.

Course contact time: Up to 20 hours / week

Additional study time: 15 hours / week for self-study and individual learning

You will be taught through a mix of teaching methods which may include: lectures, seminars and tutorials. You will also have access to Solent Online Learning, an online portal for teaching resources.

Assessment for this programme is through a mix of coursework, exams and portfolios.

TERM ZERO

For those who study the 3 term variant of this programme, you will start in Term Zero which is designed to support those who hold IELTS 4.5 at the start of the programme.

This additional term aims to ensure that you are able to achieve an English language level equivalent to IELTS 5.0 at the start of Term 1. Term Zero involves a 12-week term comprising of 20 hours per week of English. Units are built around the key linguistic elements that students are required to develop. You will be required to pass each unit before progressing on to Terms 1 and 2 of the programme.

To progress on to your chosen undergraduate programme at Solent University, you will need to achieve at least 40% in every unit in your International Foundation Programme.

You will be advised at the point of offer if there are any further progression requirements for your chosen undergraduate programme.

If you are studying the 2 Term programme, you will study Terms One and Two. If you are studying the 3 Term programme, you will study all Terms detailed below.

TUITION FEES 2020/21

  • 2 term programme: £10,500
  • 3 term programme: £13,000

Your course fees cover registration costs, teaching for the course and access to the learning resources at the University and Student Support Services. They do not include the cost of course books, stationery and photocopying/printing costs, accommodation, living costs, travel, hobbies, sports or other leisure activities.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

You should also be prepared to buy some course texts at £30 each (average £200 per year). In addition, you should be prepared to buy personal writing materials and cover photocopying costs at around £50.

Staff may wish to take students on field trips as an additional part of their studies, and you should allow around £100 for this.
