John Whelan
Lecturer in Business and EAP

Biography:

John joined QAHE in his current role as Business and EAP (English for Academic Purposes) lecturer at the Solent University pathway centre in January 2021. Working on the International Foundation Programme (IFP), John assists and prepares international students who intend to join the university’s business undergraduate pathway. As module leader for the IFP’s Management Fundamentals module, he develops and delivers a learning programme that aims to introduce and familiarise business pathway students with management theories and contexts whilst promoting and practising academic skills required for undergraduate study. John employs a range of different teaching styles in his delivery including inquiry-based, collaborative and Socratic methods while promoting learner confidence and independence.
John’s background in Higher Education includes working on pre-sessional English programmes for international post-graduate students at the University of Southampton and development and delivery of International Year One and Pre-Master’s business modules at Bournemouth University International College. He has also worked in Further Education, developing and teaching modules for Bournemouth & Poole College’s Level 3 BTEC extended diploma in Business.

After teaching English exclusively since 1995, John took a 5-year break from education from 2013, when he worked at senior management operational support roles within the financial sector. Upon his return to teaching in 2018, he began to specialise in business – initially teaching business English and later a range of specific business studies subjects. Throughout his career, John has maintained an active interest in quality management and continuous improvement and aims to incorporate these principles into his teaching practice.
